The 5 museum shops

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Gammel Strandvej 13
3050 Humlebæk

Louisiana

The view is overlooking Øresund and not the Thames, but Louisiana’s museum shop in Humlebæk is the closest one gets to Tate Modern’s shop in London. Here you may add a shopping spree to a visit, which includes taking in artistic impressions, beautiful scenery and designer furniture such as the famous sofa by Børge Mogensen and the cutlery of Arne Jacobsen.

The shop has interesting designer goods by brands such as Eames (however nothing beyond ‘carrying’ size), and ceramics and china from designers like Helbak og Ditte Fischer. You’ll also find children’s toys, which won’t offend an adult eye like lovely mobiles and wooden toys and of course an excellent selection of art books – both in Danish and English. Finally, you’ll find lots of art posters from Louisiana’s many exhibitions.

The National Museum

The bronze age, the stone age, rock engravings, sun chariots, alters, the ethnographic collections, the Victorian home or just going outside to pat the pillar of shame of the traitor Corfitz Ulfeld before heading for brunch in the café? Be prepared to select and decide whenever you enter the exhibitions of the National Museum. The same may be said about the shop, where you’ll find a large selection of just about everything.

From copies of ancient jewellery (which, however, should be worn in small amounts and not teamed with lots of home knit woollies unless you still want to look relatively cool) to glass beams from Ghana, paper dolls, Christmas decorations, toy castles, jigsaws with pictures of Tutankhamon, medieval games, cushions with old tapestry patterns and costumes for dressing up handsome knights or pretty princesses. You’ll also find the perfect gift for the confirmand as the shop has a large selection of cross pendants, in both classic and more alternative varieties (it also sells Thor’s hammer pendants, if your confirmand is going through a religiously confused phase).

The National Gallery of Denmark

The National Gallery of Denmark is beautifully located in Østre Anlæg, so don’t forget to combine a visit to the exhibitions with a walk around the lovely park and drop by the museum’s bookshop before heading home.

The bookshop is run by Arnold Busck, who has 20 shops all over the country, the shop in The National Gallery has several advantages. You’ll, for example, find a very large selection of art books both in Danish and English, art posters from the museum’s exhibitions and greeting cards indicating a bit more creativity and enthusiasm than one found in your local supermarket 10 mins. before the actual birthday party.

On that note, the shop also has great solutions for last minute birthday gifts – and it’s open on Sundays and holidays! And finally, you’re able to exchange a gift in any Arnold Busck shop anywhere in the country, if the book on French Modernism wasn’t quite the thing.

Designmuseum Danmark

Bredgade 68

The Danish Museum of Art and Design

Foto: Ikke oplyst
Besides the exhibitions on art and design, there are several good reasons for stopping by the Danish Museum of Art and Design in the peaceful part of Bredgade. It has a very nice café serving Danish classics and an absolutely lovely garden. During summer this garden is used for open air performances by Grønnegårdsteatret and is open to the audience and their picnic baskets before the show, but it is a true oasis in the city at any time of year. And finally you may stop by the museum’s shop, which sells selected art ware.

Next time you’re looking for a fun bag from someone like Jooi, a lovely vase, lamps or a specialised book on art and design this is the place go. The things are meant to be used, but are at the same also aesthetically pleasing. You’ll find designers such as Ole Jensen, Anna Carin Dahl, Matti Klenell and Harri Koskine. The entrance to the shop is free so next time you need an alternative greeting card for your auntie it’s a good place to look. And don’t forget to take a look at the garden. And the exhibitions.
