Restaurants in Copenhagen with Michelin stars 2009

  • Foto: David Høgsholt Foto: David Høgsholt

Every year in March, Michelin releases their guide of hotels, restaurants and places of interest in large European cities, rating the best restaurants with two or three stars.
Closely followed by Stockholm, Copenhagen is still the gastronomic capital of the North boasting a total of 14 Michelin stars distributed among 13 restaurants.

The following is a list of gourmet restaurants in and around Copenhagen rated with stars in Michelin’s Main Cities in Europe guide 2009.

The Surprise of the Year: Kokkeriet

Foto: Ikke oplyst
Kokkeriet, situated in Kronprinsessegade, was awarded its first Michelin star in 2006, while having the chef Mads Refslund, who is now the founder of another Michelin starred restaurant MR, as its head chef. Today the tiny kitchen in Kronprinsessegade is in the hands of a new head chef Lasse Askov, who has run for ‘Chef of the Year’ on the National Team of Chefs and worked at Krogh’s Sea Food Restaurant and the Spanish Tapas restaurant Extra, the latter having recently closed. On the menu this March, when Kokkeriet regained its Michelin star, you may have found a starter of raw shrimp with lumpfish roe, smoked fresh cheese and oat flakes or a main course of veal’s tail, sweetbread, crispy onions and ramsons. Kokkeriet is one of the cosiest gourmet restaurants in the city and an excellent place to bring a special someone for a romantic candlelight dinner; especially if you’d like to challenge your taste buds. The prices are at the lower end of the Michelin scale.

Herman i Nimb

Bernstorffsgade 5
1577 København V

The New Star of the Year: Herman in Nimb

Foto: Else Bjørn
The gourmet restaurant Herman is the jewel of the gastronomic temple Nimb. The restaurant takes up two floors and boasts a view overlooking the famous Tivoli Gardens. Herman is named after the head chef, the former chef at another famous gourmet restaurant the Kong Hans, Thomas Herman. He presents his Danish gastronomic heritage interpreted with creativity and exquisite craftsmanship. His origins from southern Jutland are also an element to be reckoned with, though some guests have found it quite an ordeal to get through the gastronomic interpretation of the famous (and very abundant) coffee-and-cake spread from that part of the country. An evening at Herman will cost you the equivalent of a ticket to the famous Roskilde Festival (or around 2000 Danish Kr. per person), if you go all the way with aperitifs and wines. But the experience also includes sitting in designer chairs by Wegner costing over 46.000 Danish kr. each and eating your main course with Laguiole knives inlaid with horse bone. If you’re looking for an undisturbed, romantic dinner, you might want to book one of two tables at the back on the top floor. The tables towards the front on the top floor overlook the kitchen. The view of the park is best on the lower floor.

Noma

The City’s Only Restaurant with TWO Stars: Noma

Interiør dagslys Noma Foto: Jørgen Jensen, Scanpix
Dining at Noma is more than a dining experience: It is a mind-expanding experience. The name Noma is short for Nordisk Mad (Nordic Food) and this is precisely what you’ll be served in Denmark’s only restaurant holding two of the precious stars. You may expect masterly gastronomy in small portions. The cuisine is proud of its Nordic cultural heritage which sees the produce smoked, salted and pickled, and corn, herbs, berries, vinegar and honey play vital roles in the dishes. It is not a ‘Viking cuisine’, however, but a cuisine in which Norwegian lobsters, oysters and other exclusive foods are prepared with gastronomic creativity and finesse, turning food into art. Much of the produce is found in Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Island and you may encounter ingredients like seaweed, musk ox and deep sea crab on your plate. If your budget and the occasion don’t call for the full show, you might try a couple of light dishes for lunch accompanied by glass of fine wine or two and skip desert. Head chef René Redzepi’s light Scandinavian tone suits lunch dishes very well and at that time of day the wharf of the North Atlantic is a sea of light. An ideal place for spending a day off and for spoiling yourself and someone special.

In Vesterbrogade: Formel B

In 2003, the two chefs Rune Jochumsen and Kristian Møller and an investor took over the restaurant Formel B. After just one year in the kitchen, the hard work of the two young chefs was awarded with a star in the international Michelin Guide. Formel B has great ambitions and in 2006, the owners decided to expand the restaurant with a function room and extra seating for 10. The cuisine is Danish/French, leaning towards French with a classic, slightly masculine touch and the decor is both minimalist and intimate.

Kong Hans Kælder

Vingårdsstræde 6
1070 København K

The Classic: Kong Hans' Kælder

Kong Hans' Kælder Foto: Else Bjørn
Kong Hans' Kælder (King Hans’ Cellar) has had its Michelin star since 1983. Whilst new gourmet restaurants change their head chefs on a regular basis, the most famous gourmet restaurant in Copenhagen has had just three head chefs and it has existed for over 30 years. This is one explanation of why Kong Hans’ Kælder has been able to offer sublime luxury and gastronomy since 1976 and still is the place to book a table, when you suddenly have an extra 5.000 Danish Kr. in your budget. The head chef is Thomas Rode Andersen and Thilde Maarbjerg is responsible for the wine cellar.

Opening Hours:
Mon-Sat 18.00-24.00 p.m. The restaurant is closed during Easter, for three weeks during summer, during Christmas and on bank holidays.

Restaurant Kiin Kiin

Guldbergsgade 21
2200 København N

The Thai: Kiin Kiin

Foto: Else Bjørn
After three years as restaurant manager at The Paul, Henrik Yde Andersen opened Kiin Kiin at Nørrebro. Six months later the restaurant was awarded a so-called rising star in the Michelin Guide and in the following guide this was replaced with real shiny Michelin star. This places Kiin Kiin in the very exclusive company of Michelin starred Thai restaurants, which besides Kiin Kiin, just includes the London restaurant Nahm. The cuisine of Kiin Kiin takes its inspiration from Siam. This means vegetables and shellfish and no milk or cream. Henrik Yde Andersen has great flair for turning dining out into more than just an experience for your taste buds. Here the experience may also include drinking off very short stemmed wine glasses, admiring a taxidermic cat in the lounge or eating off alternative plates made from slate.

Søllerød Kro

Søllerødvej 35
2840 Holte

Out of the City: Søllerød Kro

Foto: Else Bjørn
Its French gastronomy, a sublime and unparalleled table service and one of the best and largest wine menus in the country, all framed by an idyllic setting by the village church and pond, have made the gastronomic Heaven of Holte one of the country’s favourite destinations for decades. The Inn, which dates back to 1677, was awarded a Michelin star in 2007 under the reign of restaurant manager Jan Restorff and head chef Jakob de Neergaard. Since then, the Inn has been renovated and the historic rooms brightened. The kitchen is classic French with lots of truffle and foie gras in all shapes and sizes dressed up with some modern touches and updates. And no, it is not the cheapest place to eat, but no guest leaves Søllerød Kro hungry. The wine menu is impressive – particularly if one adores wine from Burgundy and Champagne. And who doesn’t?

Era Ora

Overgaden neden Vandet 33B
1414 København K

The Italian: Era Ora

Era Ora, which is situated behind a discreet facade at Christianshavn, is Copenhagen’s only Michelin starred Italian restaurant and is therefore obviously the most expensive. Era Ora has a pretty atrium and on warm summer evenings, the whole facade facing the atrium is open. Era Ora was one the first top restaurants to introduce their guests to a continuous flow of small dishes. The food is Italian, of course, but it is also contemporary. The temperature controlled wine cellar holds a large collection of Italian wines, several of them famous and interesting and not easily found elsewhere in Denmark.
