The weekend starts early in Nørrebro, when Rust opens the doors to the night club HEAT, which provides Copenhagen with nightclub atmosphere for anyone looking for a drink and a dance. This place is not about sipping drinks quietly or downing beers and casting dice, no, this is where you’ll go to look for DJ’s, dance floor, inviting moves and playing hard to get in stilettos.

All of this (mating)dance is accompanied by tones of ‘urban music, hip hop and beyond’ in the words of Rust. Guests who don’t have heavy responsibilities on Thursdays, may party till five in the morning. Afterwards they may watch the sunrise over Skt. Hans Torv, possibly over a croissant and a cup of coffee from 7Eleven or enjoy a view of the lakes and try to avoid heavy hangovers by consuming abundant amounts of fat and salt in the kebabs from King of Kebab in Nørrebrogade.

It’s all you have to say: “And then, we ended the night at Andy’s”, and your listener will know that this is synonymous with a late, and probably quite wet, night out. The pub in Gothersgade, behind the facade with the triangular pattern, is a proper old school place. Here you’ll drink from the bottle, cast dice, and look sadly or drunkenly at each other across the solid oak tables.

The atmosphere is friendly, even if the customers have been out for several hours before hitting Andy’s. If you’re bringing your own party, it’s the perfect place to end an evening. On the other hand, if you’re are already feeling tired and pessimistic, the slightly self-destructive, morbid, and ship-wreck inspired sensation of the place might overwhelm you. But fortunately, ‘Kongens Have’ is bright and green and right outside and so is a free taxi and of course you’ll have a good story about “how we ended the night at Andy’s”, ready the next day.

Among party people and students, Thursday is known as ‘small Friday’, so finding somewhere to party on this night shouldn’t be a problem. One place, which actually makes a bit more effort to turn your Thursday night into a proper party, is NASA SUITE, where Thursdays are celebrated in style. A butler greets you at the door, and the white room at the end of the elevator is decorated with red velvet and flowers.

The champagne is chilled, the girls are long-legged and the gentlemen have golden credit cards in the pockets. When the party is over, pizza has been consumed in the Pizza house in Gothersgade, the cab fare spent and the feet are sore, the metro at Kgs. Nytorv is right around the corner – which luckily runs 24 hours a day every day bringing party people safely home before ‘small Friday’ turns into a proper Friday morning.

People from the outer Nørrebro are used to most extremes, but a nightclub frequented by hordes of partying, smoking, drinking, loud youngsters turned out to be a bit too much for the neighbourhood around Sorgenfrigade, where Jolene’s used to be. So the club closed, only to re-emerge in the new party area Kødbyen, home to the city’s butchers.

Here are no neighbours to be bothered by the heavy bass, only pork chops, which gently rock along, even if the butchers themselves are not too impressed with the mess left by the clubbers in the harsh light of day. Jolene’s guests are free to make a mess every morning for the club is open till two a.m. offering music and abundant cocktails combined with relaxed urban atmosphere and cool DJ’s.

Frederiksberg is not the easiest place to find a party on a weeknight, after the sushi from one of the city’s best sushi places Sanshin in Smallegade has swum past or the last pasta from Fiasco has been consumed. But Cafe Intime in Allegade is the area’s best bet when it comes to finding a party atmosphere till two a.m. on all nights of the week.

Besides a very varied audience, whose ideas about normality are definitively broader than in most places, the place offers daily entertainment like piano players or drag queens all supported by an old record player and ancient vinyl records. Extremely festive, but yours truly would recommend sticking to beer, as the house white wine has managed to bring down an entire editorial office the morning after.
