Rust began in the aftermath of the political movement, Next Stop Soviet, from the mid-eighties. The venue was the initiative of two former members of the movement and was placed in the old campaign office in central Nørrebro.
It opened in 1989 and was named after the German Mathias Rust, who landed a plane on the Red Square in Moscow in 1987. From day one and throughout the nineties, the place was a successful venue with room enough for everyone. Especially Copenhagen’s music milieu liked hanging out at Rust.
In 1999, the place went through an extensive restoration and the new Rust appeared far more modern and stylish and targeting the ever-growing club scene. Part of the old rock audience disappeared, but a younger and more clubbing- minded audience welcomed the venue with open arms.
Today the venue finds itself comfortably placed between music venue and nightclub. Rust has a small, but great stage for smaller concerts and an excellent administration that books an exciting and varied program of rock, pop, soul, electronic, and hip hop.
And with 4-5 concerts a week, Rust is today one of the most active music venues in town.
