The number of traditional record stores in Denmark has gone from 82 in 2002 to 69 in 2005 (according to Denmark’s statistics), but that doesn’t make record dealers in Copenhagen shudder. AOK presents this guide to a selection of small and obscure record shops in the city, which have something for everyone – whether you’re into reggae, punk or electronica.

Repo Man – For the Punks

‘Wake up, you slumbering city!’ seems to be the screaming message of the record covers on display in the windows of Repo Man. This record store in Fenmarksgade close to ‘De Gamles by’ (a former old people’s home area) specialises in hardcore punk, barbed wired rock’n’roll with an emphasis on rock and garage of the most sweaty kind.

Rock Uglen – For the Heavy-Hearted

Rockuglen (the Rock Owl) on the corner of Frederiksborggade and Nørre Farimagsgade is an absolute must for any vinyl freak. Not just because of the great selection of vinyl nor just because Rockuglen is the oldest specialised shop selling metal, hardcore, punk and blues, but also because shop owner Kim Ejnar Kofod is something of an omniscient owl himself.
