Nørrebro and Nordvest make up the edgy and multicultural melting pot of Copenhagen. Many immigrants and students live here among a wealth of well-stocked produce stores, cozy coffee bars and quirky stores. The urban pulse throbs loudly and diversity is omnipresent. On a summer’s day, you’ll find hip Copenhageners sitting on Dronning Louises Bro, leaning against the fence and enjoying the sun with lounge music and a cold six-pack.

One of the first streets you’ll come across on the Nørrebro side of the bridge is Blågårdsgade. In the first part of the street, you will find popular little coffee and beer bars, for example Harbo Bar and Props Coffee Shop, which are frequently visited by both local Nørrebro people and guests from other parts of the town. Like most other places, everyone is in high spirits when the sun is shining and the many benches are packed with relaxed Copenhageners.

If you go a bit further, Blågårdsgade becomes Blågårds Plads with the popular hangout Blågårds Apotek and the alternative music store Insula Music, which sells analog gems that you won’t be able to find on Spotify. One of the city’s most popular places is Assistens Kirkegård where many legendary Danes are buried. The cemetery is used as a park and a place to relax and sometimes, people also work on their tan among the graves.

Jægersborggade is, among other things, known as the birthplace of Copenhagen initiatives such as the porridge shop Grød, the coffee gurus at The Coffee Collective and Michelin star restaurant Relæ with head chef Christian F. Puglisi, who is the driving force. In 2010, the restaurant got a little brother, namely Manfreds & Vin - the slightly cheaper and equally popular alternative, right across the street from the restaurant on Jægersborggade.

Nørrebro’s beating heart of rock music can be found at the combined music venue and nightclub Rust, right next to Sankt Hans Torv (Sankt Hans Square). At the square, you’ll find Kaffeplantagen where you can enjoy hot drinks in good company or by your laptop in a relaxed atmosphere.

If you’re in the mood for shopping, Elmegade is a good place to start. On this street, you’ll find some of the hippest clothes stores in town, for example the hyped designer label Acne and more classic stores such as Suit. You can also find second-hand treasures at Fremtiden, which is the Danish Red Cross’s idea of the thrift store of the future.

At the far end of Nørrebrogade, where Nørrebro becomes Nordvest, you’ll find Lygten Station. The disused train station has been converted into a culture center and houses, among other things, comedy events, movie nights and unique concert experiences. In this part of town, you can also get a good bite to eat, for instance seasonally inspired dishes at SWAG or lunch classics at Måltid.
