The newest district of Copenhagen is developing rapidly. Amager has in a few years gone from being Copenhagen’s provincial island to being a hip part of the city as more young people have moved there. There is also a large number of students from University of Copenhagen and the IT University, which are both located right next to DR Byen by Emil Holms Kanal. Several dormitories have also sprung up nearby and the fact that young people are so dominant in this district has definitely contributed to its development.

Islands Brygge is a great example of this. One of the most popular initiatives at Bryggen is Havnebadet, which many water-loving Copenhageners use all year round. At Bryggen, there is also a lot of delicious food, for instance at the bakery Wulff Konstali Food Shop, which is used by many locals as their morning destination. You’ll find tables and newspapers and, of course, great bread for every taste.

If the thought of a cold ice cream seems appealing, you should swing by the ice cream parlor Bryggen11, which is loved for their delicious, homemade ice cream. If you’re bringing food home, you can swing by Café Alma at “Bagdøren” on Isafjordsgade, which sells food from the café to take on the go.

The reputable Copenhagen boys of Cofoco have also established themselves at Bryggen with their Italian country kitchen Scarpetta II. But this is not Italian food as we know it as it takes its point of departure in Scandinavian produce.

The main artery of Amager is Amagerbrogade, which is full of shopping possibilities. There are also local gems such as the coffee bar Kosta Kaffe with quality coffee from The Coffee Collective and Ingolfs Kaffebar with a cozy, homely atmosphere if you want a more local coffee experience.

On Holmbladsgade, you’ll find Amager’s perhaps smallest but highly popular coffee bar Komsurabel and on the other side of the street, you’ll find Jaguaren, a bar that has gained cult status on Amager. On weekdays, the last-mentioned is typically visited by locals and regulars, but on weekends, things are lively in the brown surroundings with ‘90s hits playing over the speakers, draft beer at reasonable prices and cigarette smoke in the air. Further down the street, you’ll find Amager Ølhus, which serves a wide variety of beers.

A trip to Amager Bio could also become quite an experience. The disused movie theater organizes up to 125 concerts a year and there is something for every taste, whether you like heavy metal or mainstream pop music.

Amager Strandpark attracts many different types of Copenhageners. The paths wind through the beach sand and are, due to the incredibly smooth surface, very popular for skateboarding, roller skating and running. And during the summer season, the sand is of course packed with sunbathers.

Refshaleøen, located north of Amager, is a true paradise for those who love nature and action-packed experiences. In Copenhagen Cable Park, you can ride a wakeboard while being towed through the water by a cable system and at Blocks & Walls, you can climb as high as Spiderman. If your stomach is growling, there is a solution in the form the popular restaurant Amass, which can also be found on Refshaleøen.
