The Danish Film Institute has its own cinema and the repertoire covers everything from exclusive glimpses of film history, including classics and cult films, to films straight out of film school and the best selection of short films and documentaries you’ll find anywhere.
Every month Cinemateket presents a themed series concentrating for example on DDR, George Clooney or Grace Kelly. There are no commercials – and the youngest members of the family have an entire section of Cinemateket to themselves: ‘Børnebiffen’.

This is one the city’s oldest cinemas and has been frequented both by German soldiers and British liberators during World War II. It was formerly owned by the legendary Danish film maker Carl Th. Dreyer. In 2008, Dagmar underwent a much needed renovation and reopened with new chairs (with cup holders) and fewer seats so that you might finally stretch those legs. However, the cosy atmosphere remains as well as a repertoire of high quality and the nostalgic ‘Sal 1’ which has kept its slightly shabby corduroy seats.

The local cinema of Nørrebro opened almost nine years ago, in an old iron foundry which used to produce small locomotives, and one must say that Empire Bio still keeps its steam high. Its offers an unconventional timetable, quality film choices and sofas great for kissing – sticking to the philosophy that life’s too short to fight over armrests and squeezed legs.

This tiny cinema at RÃ¥dhuspladsen has managed to survive thanks to its narrow repertoire and the enthusiastic souls behind it. It only has one room, which was built before double armrest and other comforts became popular, so the quality lies in the choice of films, the attentive and well informed service and the home brewed coffee.

The quality of the sound is so spectacular that it has been approved by Mr Star Wars himself, George Lucas. The projector belongs to the elite of digitalism, the screen is one the largest in the country and the cinema itself is spacious enough to accommodate more than 1100 guests in seats that tip backwards and allow you to enjoy the film completely. Need we say more?

Hurray for a cinema that’s both comfortable and unconventional and lets you sit back and enjoy your film in plane seats! This last proper Vesterbro cinema opened in 1975 and was named after a film about two loveable tramps ‘Fy and Bi’. Here you’ll only find quality films appealing to a narrow audience as well as films that have been taken off the repertoire everywhere else.
