Guide to: Downtown Copenhagen

Insider’s Guide: The inner city of Copenhagen revolves around the longest pedestrian street in the world, Strøget, which runs between the two big squares Rådhuspladsen and Kongens Nytorv.

This area of course has the highest concentration of tourist attractions and shops in Copenhagen, but if you dare step off the beaten path just a little, you will be rewarded with experiencing some exciting neighbourhoods and new parts of town, new shops and all the other things that make your city holiday something really special.

If you are on a tight travelling budget, you should hop on the cheap and easy harbour bus (i.e. the boat bus) Havnebus 904, kick back and let it take you on a splendid cruise around Copenhagen’s waterways and canals from Nyhavn to Sluseholmen, where you will see a lot of Copenhagen’s great new architecture on the harbour front.

The boat bus leaves every 10 minutes and goes from The Black Diamond (The Royal Library) via Knippelsbro, Nyhavn, The Royal Danish Opera and other places to Toldboden. It is great value for money. Now that you have saved a bit, it is only natural to want to go shopping.

The Royal Danish Opera

The inner city has lots of shopping areas apart from Strøget. On Ny Østergade for instance you find a favourite store among many Danish stylists; Gossip. Just a few hundred metres down the street and around the corner on Store Regnegade is the exclusive store Apartment that carries many international fashion brands such as MM6 Martin Margiela, Muubaa, See by Chloé and Tony Cohen.

Kongens Have is an oasis of a park right in the middle of the city. In the park’s white building, the one with the cosy paned windows, you find the restaurant Orangeriet, from which gourmet chefs serve the classic Danish open-faced sandwiches on dark rye bread or light summer courses in pure H.C. Andersen idyll. In the evening they roll out a Danish-French-inspired menu and on Sunday afternoons lovely cakes are served in abundance.

If you visit during the summer, you can sit under a parasol, and if you come during winter you, of course, sit inside, but feel the warmth and the brightness from the daylight that pours in and floods the building through the restaurant’s many windows.

Tivoli is at its most beautiful in the evening, when thousands of Chinese lanterns and lights create an unequalled romantic ambience.

For a good dinner at a reasonable price reserve a table at Nimbs Terasse, which, despite the name, is not a part of the great white Nimb building facing the main train station, but a smaller venue located inside the Tivoli Garden next to Glassalen.

Nimbs Terasse

Nimbs Terasse is timeless and beautiful and has a good Danish-French-inspired kitchen, friendly service and outside seating on the terrace or in one of the partly open, little glass pavilions, where smoking is also permitted.

If you feel like going out after dinner, try something different and fun. In Mikkel Bryggersgade, right in the heart of Copenhagen, you find one of Copenhagen’s most rustic cinemas. Grand Teateret exudes true love of film, and the café is well worth a visit, even if you are not going to see a movie.

In 1987 The City of Copenhagen gave Copenhagen’s music scene a new venue in the inner city; the city’s old water pumping station. The facility was successfully transformed into a popular music hall, that unfortunately had to close down for a short period of time in 2010, but now Pumpehuset is running again.

For dedicated fans of electronic music Culture Box is a must. This venue is the closest you get to a Berlin club in Copenhagen and has managed to attract top DJs from all over the world since opening in 2005. Go there if you take your House and your Techno very seriously.

Finally you could
visit the gay-friendly bar Jailhouse with its barred windows and bartenders in police uniforms, which is not the only curious thing about this place: They also have an excellent soup restaurant on the first floor, which is open 6 to 10 pm Monday to Saturday
